Going Carbon: I bought a Second Hand 2008 Cervelo R3!

I actually bought this Cervelo R3 frame way back in the summer; it’s just taken me far too long to get a piece up on it. I’d rather be riding it than writing about it, but on a damp windy January day I thought it best to take the opportunity to cobble together some thoughts on the switch from aluminium to carbon and from an ‘entry-level’ frame to a Tour de France level one (albeit an old TDF model).

I went for the change partly due to being a bike tart and really wanting a Cervelo and partly because the Canyon Roadlite I started on was always intended to be just that – a start. It was a fantastic package for the money and I always thought that if I really got into cycling I could always upgrade the frame to something more exotic.

Following regular scans of eBay for high end frames going cheap I’d started to think that a bargain didn’t really exist in cycling. Pretty much all of the sexy carbon frames I was seeing with low starter prices were going ballistic in the last couple of days of bidding. I spotted one Kuota Kharma frame that was hovering around £100 for ages. It wasn’t the brand I really wanted but it looked cool and seemed a lot more aero than my aluminium Canyon. I watched that auction like a hawk only for it to cruise up to over £400 in the last few hours. These cycling boys were on it!

I was thinking of just giving eBay a miss, maybe saving up some cash or going down the never-never route and get a bike on finance. The local shop had some lovely Giant Propels in that were very tempting. Then lady-luck chimed in. A Cervelo R3 in my favourite colourway appeared on eBay on a 5 day listing. It was just the frame and seat-post (perfect for me as I was planning to keep a lot of the Canyon components) and had been in a minor knock so was going cheaply. The eBay user seemed very open and honest about the damage showing photos of a scrape along one of the chainstays which was the only damage to the frame. I think this damage was the reason I ended up grabbing the frame for just over £200. I think a lot of people are wary of buying damaged carbon. There seems to be a lot of hocus-pocus rumours about the integrity of the structure being easily damaged in minor collisions and the structural problems can be ‘hidden’. I wasn’t too worried by this. It was a bloody Cervelo R3 for £200! A bloody Tour de France frame….! I was overjoyed.

The bike arrived and I was like a kid, bouncing off the walls and cradling it in my arms. I cleaned it thoroughly and then polished it with a rotary polisher (over-kill I know – but it made it shinier!) I then sealed it with some long life car wax – this baby was starting to look good. Being a bit of a novice with push bikes I then got the good guys at Cycle X to swap the components from my Canyon over to the new machine, they did a great job. At this point I was gagging to ride it but work commitments and planning our wedding had to come first. I did get the chance to weigh it and was amazed at the difference, to the point where I’m not sure the luggage scales I used can be trusted. The weight difference was as follows;

Canyon Roadlite 6.0 in standard spec (105 + Mavic Aksiums) = 8.3kg

Cervelo R3 Frame + Carbon Seatpost with all other components donated from the Canyon = 6.9kg

1.4kg drop from just swapping out the frame and seat post!?! It did feel a hell of a lot lighter. When you lifted the bike via the top-tube the weight now felt greatest at either end where the wheels were. Almost like a see-saw. Whereas with the Canyon frame in place the weight felt more evenly spread. As the natural thought process of a bike tart goes I was now thinking….. I need new wheels! They could wait though.

First Ride

As a tester my first ride was just 10 miles or so. I needed to dial in things like the stem height and saddle height so I didn’t want to go too mad. Was there much of a difference between the two frames ride wise? In short: yes, a massive one. The Canyon Roadlite is a very good aluminium frame, this is backed up by pretty much every bike mag in the world, but my first ride on the Cervelo showed me how good carbon can be from a ride quality point of view. Even bearing in mind that the Cervelo R3 frame I have is about 4 years older in terms of design, it simply wipes the floor with the ally Canyon. And so it should really – brand new it was about four times as expensive.

The biggest difference is the way the Cervelo massages out the smaller bumps. When riding on a gritty road surface the Canyon would buzz, zzzzzzz through your saddle continuously. Hitting the same sections on the Cervelo and you just don’t feel anything, someone next to you riding an aluminium frame could be complaining about the poor road surface and you would be wondering what the hell they were on about. The R3 is better over bigger bumps as well, it feels like it undulates over them, softening the blow. There’s no jarring feeling when you hit a pot-hole or go over a rough drain. I used to avoid drains at all costs on the Canyon because they used to hurt or annoy me. On the R3 they don’t bother me at all. So I think this is the biggest difference and certainly justifies my decision to upgrade.

Is it faster?

In honesty… yeah but not by much. The frame is smaller than the Roadlite. I’ve got a 54 R3 and the Roadlite was a 58 (a 56 top tube – so a 56 for most manufacturers), this automatically gives a lower, racier position up front. Plus the R3 is a race designed bike, so the front end is lower than the Canyon anyway, and this actually took some getting used to. I had mild neck ache for a little while after the first few rides but that soon went away. So the racier position does make it feel marginally faster on the flats. I feel like I can hold speeds above 20mph for longer – definitely. But this might purely be down to the frame size rather than the frame itself.

However I do have some empirical evidence which suggests that the R3 is quicker up hill. There’s a segment in Beaulieu that I often use to gauge fitness. It’s a steady 3% hill that often appears at the end of rides and it’s always a good challenge to push tired legs as hard as possible to catapult you up. On my first meaningful effort on the R3 I beat my segment time by 10 seconds. A PR that was the result of a year or so’s riding.

And the R3 does feel sprightlier up the hills. You can notice the lack of mass helping you with each pedal stroke when the gradient gets steeper.


The only downside I’ve found with the R3, and I’m not sure if this is true of all carbon bikes, is the comparative lack of feel and response in sprints. The Canyon felt incredibly stiff behind the pedals and almost pushed back when you got out of the saddle and stomped on the pedals. The R3 in comparison feels a little numb. I’m not sure if this makes it slower when sprinting but it definitely doesn’t feel as responsive as the ally Canyon. Perhaps this is something you have to live with as a trade off for the buttery smooth ride?

Overall I’m very pleased with the R3, every time I look at it I want to take it out for a spin – and I think that’s the test of a good bike. It’s so comfortable that you genuinely feel pretty fresh after rides of 50 miles or more, the only problem I have now is finding some time to do more of those long rides…. Hopefully spring will be along shortly to help me out with that.

Spring is here!

So the sun has started peeping out on occasion and the evenings are getting lighter, it must be Spring! Probably my favourite time of year actually, full of anticipation of all those balmy summer evenings (hopefully!), warm sunset surf sessions in lazy waves, long days out on the bike, barbecues and beers. Here’s hoping this year gives us as much sun as last time round, if the evidence of early spring is anything to go by I reckon it could be a belter.

As for the pedaling, well I’ve not been getting out as much as I would like, largely due to playing football again regularly but when I have got the bike out it’s been in good weather, and it’s been a lot of fun! The guards are off too which has made the bike feel a little more zippy, plus it looks pretty again now. A sample of spring time snaps thus far:

Been a bit slack with the updates on the blog to be fair. Apologies. It’s been tough to fit in blog updates around work, family, the festive chaos and riding like a BOSS around the New Forest’s lanes. I’m currently at a bit of an impasse due to a football injury – it seems, now at 31, I can’t play more than a couple of games without picking up some sort of body complaint!

Good news is the SKS Raceblade Longs I fitted in the autumn have been working a treat. Staying on solidly and not producing too much in the way of annoying rattley noises. One thing you do have to watch out for is gunk getting caught in and around the clips near the brake calipers- as the clearance is so tight in this area any build up just ends up scrubbing your tyre and my rear has been squared off slightly. I guess I need to just clean the thing regularly! I’m slack with that as well.

While I have been out riding I’ve managed to take some snaps here and there so I thought I’d share these to give the blog a bit of colour on this dreary January day.

Fitting SKS Raceblade Longs to Road Bikes with 25mm Tyres

Well, it had to happen some when… the weather has turned. As late as last Friday down on the south coast of Blighty we were lucky enough to experience a sunny 20c day. Pretty unusual for late October and I pounced on the opportunity to get the bike out for the morning:

However as I write this it’s dark, raining and struggling to hit double figures temperature wise. This sort of weather change calls for a fresh approach if I’m to keep pedaling over the winter (my first winter proper as a road cyclist). Some people buy another bike – a winter one – that gets used and abused and has proper big mudguards to protect you from the winter muck. I love this approach and I do like the idea of a winter steed. I need more bikes (everyone does). But I can’t really justify getting another bike and I also have my eye on getting something more aero and possibly carbon to replace my Canyon Roadlite next spring/summer. Or, if funds can’t stretch to that, I’d like to at least get some aero wheels for the Canyon. Do you see the problem? Everywhere you turn there’s expensive goodies to entice you in… And I am being enticed.

So considering all the options and my lust for getting some go faster goodies next spring I thought a minimalist plan for winter was the way to go. Mudguards for the Canyon were obviously the cheapest route to staying dry and keeping the miles under the wheels. However having a road bike at the sportier end of things means you’re a bit hamstrung for options guards wise as there’s no mounting holes for regular mudguards. Removable clip on style jobbies are what’s needed and in reality you’ve only got two choices – Crud Roadracers or SKS Raceblade Longs. Either would probably do a good enough job but a few people had mentioned that the Cruds rattle around a bit and the fittings can tend to break after a season or two. So I was up for some Raceblades in black to limit the detrimental effect guards have to a bike’s aesthetics (I’m a tart I know). Luckily some barely used items popped up locally on gumtree and I swooped in for a bargain. The guy was selling because they didn’t fit his bike. This worried me as what makes the Canyon Roadlite, and most other newer road bikes these days, particularly difficult to fit guards to is the minimal clearances between tyres and brakes. The Roadlite runs 25mm tyres rather than the usual 23mms. You get a more comfortable ride and a better roll on the bigger tyres but obviously it makes things difficult when you’re trying to slip some guards in there. After searching around on the net I found a few incidents where people had tried to fit Raceblades to bikes on 25mm tyres and failed. I was thinking these guards might have to go straight back on gumtree but decided to have a bash first since as they were sat there in the box, looking at me.

There were no meaningful instructions in the SKS box but that didn’t matter. Dan Lloyd at GCN came to the rescue and his vid is better than any instruction set. This is all you need if you’re fitting  a set of Raceblade Longs.

Basically I followed Lloydy’s advice to the letter and despite some issues with a lot of tyre rub on the rear I eventually managed to get them fitting snug and rub free! Result. The clearance is really tight and you need to allow a good 5-10 mins per wheel of faffing with the guard stays until you get the allignment right so there’s no rubbing. At one point I thought the clearances were too tight and I’d have to give up but all was well in the end. The whole thing took me just under an hour so it’s not really a quick job, but these badboys will be staying on until spring so I’m sure my bike and backside will thank me. I don’t reckon they look too bad either.

Some more advice I took from the GCN video was applying some tape to the back of the seat tube to protect the frame. If you take a look at the pic above you can see the rear guard touches the frame and I didn’t want any scrapeage. Some 3M electrical tape looks like it will do the job.

After all that faffing I was really looking forward to a test spin. I headed out on a 35 mile local loop this morning and was well pleased at the protection the Raceblades give. I went past Beaulieu River when, after the tide had come right up and partially flooded the road, it was an ideal chance to do some wet testing. I sailed right through a fairly deep section and was amazed to find I didn’t actually get wet… like not even a bit. Enjoyed. They do rattle a bit over rough roads and I can definitely feel some extra drag at higher speeds to be honest but I don’t mind that as a trade off.

This is well worth a watch with a cuppa. Encapsulates the experience of surfing in the UK well I think. It’s mostly a cold and damp pursuit but the glimmers of joy had on the good sessions make it so worth it. Can’t believe they got Charles Dance to do the narration either, his voice brings it all together. Liking the look of some of the single fins being handled in the vid too. I need to get down the beach, not sure if I can still surf!

For Sale: Ectic Concepts Chubster Mini Simmons

Unfortunately living where I do means I’m not getting in the sea too much these days and having a quiver which includes 2 x mini simmons (this one and one I made myself) doesn’t make a lot of sense. So rather than sell something I made with my very own hands I’m selling my beloved Ectic Concepts Chubster, even though of the two boards it’s actually the one I prefer! But I can’t sell a board I’ve made myself now can I?

Here are the dims; 5’2 x 23 x 3. The short length might put some people off but if you’re a reasonable surfer (I’m not even that) you really will have no trouble surfing this thing. It’s light, has tonnes of volume for it’s length but has nice 50/50 rails which mean it’s still pretty responsive. In this way it’s not a full on conventional simmons with rails that are up in the front and down in the tail but I’ve found this does make it a really versatile board and you can have some real fun on it in thigh-high right up to head high. Board comes with the wooden style FCS Keel fins with 3 tabs that are actually over £80’s worth on their own! I’m looking for £190 for it. Here’s some piccies spanning my ownership of it and I’ll add some more over the weekend when I’ve had a chance to clean the wax off it.

Premium Cheddar

I visited Cheddar Gorge earlier in the year on a moody late spring day and I’ve only just got round to posting up the photos. I didn’t realise that the South had scenery as dramatic as this. Makes you feel small looking up at the rock faces from the bottom of the gorge. There’s a great looking climb on the road that snakes through as well so I’ll have to go back with the bike next time!

The Return of South Coast Frustration

“Clean waist-high waves- get in there!” was the call on twitter from a couple of surf shops and a local surfer or two on a sunny weekend last month. Normally I do take twitter surf reports with a pinch of salt as one man’s “Flat” is another man’s “Fun log sesh” however waist high meant that surely there was something rideable. Clean’ish surf? In June, on the channel coast of the UK!? This is rare indeed. I hurriedly packed up the car, managing to dig out my summer suit which hadn’t seen any use since last October and headed for the most local spot to me, just inside the Dorset border with Hampshire. Once I arrived I remembered why I used to get so frustrated when trying to surf as much as possible round here. This was the scene;

This spot is pretty exposed so it was making the best of what little swell that was plodding in. It’s a pretty fickle place too, so despite a mile or so of sand there was only one peak working and it was like gold to the wave starved crew. There were about seven people out there vying for this little A frame roller, all on SUPs or beastly logs. There were also two Dutch guys getting suited up outside their camper van which was parked just along from my motor. You’ve come all the way from Holland to surf here?!

I stood and watched for a while, is it worth getting in? With that sand-bar already struggling to serve the guys that were out there I was thinking these Dutch boys will surely push it to breaking point… I’m already contemplating getting back in the car and heading home. Maybe I should go out on the bike or something? But wait, this one looks like it could be good?! Ah… it’s fattened up… it’s tiny actually. Hold up. Is that another peak down there? Oh no, that’s closing out. I scan around back to a groyne that produces a nice right every now and then, it’s probably the best peak on this beach on the average type of day, when the tide’s not too full. Alas, it’s not breaking. Even though there’s one guy out there willing it to.

I decide I can’t be bothered to battle it out on the crowded little A Frame, I’m maybe undergunned for it with just a 7’6 mini mal anyway. The SUPers will trample all over me. It’s not worth the parking fee for maybe a few party waves that last all of four seconds is it? Dejected I fire up the car and leave the sea behind.. that’s an hour wasted. Is all of this worth it? Should I just save surfing for the guaranteed nailed on days or trips to more wave rich coasts even? Am I just a grumpy bastard and should I have just got involved in the melle of 9 surfers to a wave?

These are the questions that haunt a south coast surfer.

3 Punctures in 4 Months – Is this Normal?

I’d read that punctures on road bikes, with their skinny tyres, are more prevalent than what you’d find with mountain biking but I think my experience is taking the piss somewhat at the moment. I bought my bike in late February, have covered almost 1100 miles since and have suffered 3 x punctures in that time- surely this isn’t typical?

My first two punctures came within the first month or so. Both pinch flats. I didn’t own a track pump at the time and I put this down to the pressures being a bit low. Perhaps I wasn’t vigilant enough with checking them before each ride. So I went out and bought a tower style pump and ensured the tyres were in and around 100psi before each ride. Around 700 or so  trouble free miles followed until yesterday’s ride:

On a nice little steep left-hand hairpin climb out of Nomansland I heard a sudden hissing from the front but the tyre looked ok still. I carried on dancing out of the saddle up the hill, thinking if this really is a puncture I’ll sort it when I’m at the top. Unlike my two previous punctures this was a gradual affair which did allow me to finish the climb before finding a suitable place to pull in. I switched tubes and as I’m getting better at this (I’m getting a fair bit of practice) did so with relative ease. It was here that I was thankful for carrying CO2 rather than a mini pump. Previous tube swap attempts have had mixed results largely because I couldn’t get enough pressure in the new tube with a mini pump. So I picked up some CO2 canisters and an inflator from the local bike shop, this time round the tyre was up near full pressure within seconds – without the need for me to continuously pump in vain.

I inspected the damaged tube but couldn’t find anything obvious so I’ll have to test it in water later on. I then was saddened as my idea of making sure my tyres were at 100psi for each ride for puncture free fun seemed flawed. But then I realised that all three punctures I’ve had so far have been on the original tubes that came with the bike; Schwalbe Extra Lights. I’ve had the front go, which I repaired with a patch only for it to go again in the aforementioned incident yesterday. The Extra Light on the back went a couple of months ago leaving me attempting to swap tubes in the cold pissing down rain of early spring… fun.

The replacements I’ve put on are just the standard Schwalbe Road Inner tubes, a little heavier but perhaps a tad more resistant to punctures? Let’s hope so.
